We exist to be the very presence of Jesus Christ in the world. As a body of Christ-followers, we welcome seekers with questions, life challenges as well as fellow believers. We value family, worship, learning, growing, and fellowship with one another. Above all, we desire to be a community that shares the true love of Christ.

New Hope launches Ridder Church Renewal – a process not a program

What is Ridder Church Renewal?

The church’s transformation begins with personal transformation. The Ridder Church Renewal process helps leaders develop the tools to confront unhealthy models that have hindered personal and congregational growth. Participants make a 30 month commitment to personal faith renewal. Along the way they commit to courageous and authentic communication and to understanding the pressures that systems bring on individual behavior. They learn to develop non-anxious leadership styles, deal with conflict, and create effective teams. We believe that congregations can make healthy changes toward God’s preferred future by starting with high expectations, committing to learning over time, and building on the core values of integrity, authenticity, courage, and love. —The Ridder Sustaining Team

How did it begin?

Former seminary president Dr. Herman Ridder and his wife, Lenora, laid the foundation in 1997 when they established a leadership endowment at Western Theological Seminary. For the first ten years Western hosted conferences with such notable leaders as Lyle Schaller, Max De Pree, Bill Hybels, Robert Creech, Trisha Taylor and Jim Herrington. In 2007 the initiative transitioned to a new learning model designed to increase church vitality and health. In its first five years, the Ridder Church Renewal process impacted 34 congregations and 42 pastoral leaders and teams within the Reformed Church in America (RCA) Synods of the Great Lakes and Mid-America. In 2012, a grant from the Lilly Foundation to Western Theological Seminary in partnership with the RCA and Christian Reformed Church (CRC) made it possible to expand this program to other regions of the U.S. and Canada.

How did New Hope Community Church get involved?

In the first weeks that Pastor Dan and Renee’ moved to Wausau, New Hope was invited to participate in Module One of RCR to fill a vacancy left by another church that could no longer continue the process.  Since Module One was already under way, this was only possible because Pastor Dan and Renee’ have been through the Ridder process in their former church.  With God’s direction, a Ridder Team was formed, and they accompanied Pastor Dan and Renee’ to a Ridder event held at the Heidel House at Green Lake, WI the first week of March.  After participating in the event, the Ridder Team made a recommendation to the Consistory to commit to involvement in the Ridder Church Renewal process.

New Hope’s Ridder Team consists of: Pastor Dan and Renee’, Dean and Carrie Kolbeck, Mark and Lori Miller, Melissa Beck and Sandie Young.  Since congregational transformation begins with individual personal transformation, we ask for your prayers for these individuals and the process they have committed to.  These are the first steps of the Ridder.

You will be hearing about how God is at work in this experience.  You will also hear more about the core values of Ridder and other aspects and involvement as time goes on.  Ridder is a process, not a program, so describing the experience is a bit like sharing what a mission trip in one sentence.  Feel free to ask questions of the Team along the way.
